Happy New Year everyone!
Hope all of you had a peaceful time on the holidays and enjoy some downtime
To start on the right foot, in the first story of 2021, I wanted to write about education and specifically about what the future holds for it.
As a new year is beginning is usual that a big group of people decide to go back into learning. Enroll in some courses or degrees and then try to finish them as soon as possible.
Over the last few months, more and more options are available to learn any single subject you can think of over the internet
Schools and universities we know moved online and now there’s a crazy amount of places to learn new things, and many of them are for free!
Last year, in February I graduated from university, and as I was ready to embark on a new chapter in my life. Deciding whether I would pursue a Master’s Degree or not, COVID came and close off every single school I wanted to apply to.
This completely changed my goals related to education, making me wonder some things like
Would a graduate degree help me with my goals?
Should I apply for a scholarship overseas?
How is everyone learning now as everything is shutdown?
and more importantly, made me question
What’s the future of education?
How it will look like in the future. What new things are coming our way
I did some research and according to the experts, education will be completely different in just a few years
Some areas will definitely change due to how the situation is now and what it’s needed to adjust to the new reality.
Education from now on will:
Have a widely spread homeschooling approach
Be with personalized learning
More e-learning platforms (really excited about this one!)
No physical campuses
Have Project-based learning, less theory, more practice
Teachers as a guide
Priority for social skills
I was really happy to learn about this as I grew, some of the concepts of the classic way of teaching for me were really outdated, things like standardized tests, using old books, and the teacher-student relationship which in some countries are still very restricted.
I’m not gonna lie, I love some things about going to school, the conversations on the campus, the mentors you can find with the professors, and even the parties/events were good but a must needed change was pending, and thanks to the Pandemic is coming soon.
At The New Gazette, I try to share brands or people doing good things on the internet as an example of the topic I’m writing about, this week I will show you the companies that are or are going to shape the future of education.
There are two types of companies:
Online first platforms
Offline to online platforms
What I’m referring to with the first type are the ones that were born on the internet, some examples are:
Youtube, some don’t considerate as an Ed-platform but personally, I totally spent a lot of time there learning about all kinds of subjects
Coursera, EDX, Future Learn, which provide access to top-level university courses and online certificates
MasterClass, a new kind of “Learning as Entertainment” where they picked the world's best minds and let them teach their specialty
Lambda School, a place as they call, “the online coding school that invests in you”
This is a new model of education as you pay only after getting a job. Right now is focused on coding but definitely will be an example for other areas of studyI actually tweet about it a while ago
Creator courses and apps, where you could easily learn step by step how to do something
Last but not least, the ones you can learn a lot from like blogs, tutorials, and guides from experts.
As what I’m referring to with the second type are the ones that were born in the outside world and now are going fully online, this can be:
University portals or video calls. You still need to pay the normal tuition even you do not visit the campus and be together with other classmates
One on One mentorship and coaching, some expert gives you actionable advice personalized according to your needs
Seminars, these were mostly at hotels but travel restrictions will make them online events
Labs and hackathons, now you can start building and learning by creating and share it online with an audience of new product enthusiasts.
The first and second types of platforms I showed you are building a new way of learning, where you could start getting knowledge at your own pace and in more different ways than before
Everyone, no matter where they are will get the opportunity to learn and get access to opportunities they don’t even have with the old model of education
I saw a few months ago an idea of a new platform of learning, I find it interesting and definitely would love a place like this
To thrive in the world of tomorrow, new skills such as creativity, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving will become a must-have and the way we learn needs to fit in
We are still unclear if someday we will get back to the old way of studying, and we need to adapt our lifestyle to how it’s done for now
Some areas of our education will definitely be different a few years from now but I’m looking forward to what’s coming
What do you think will be a drastic change coming in the education department?
I’m curious to know
Until next week,
Jose
